Volunteer Features
Since 2022, Hidayati, a staff member at Assyakirin Mosque, has been involved in the Befrienders Programme as a volunteer. She dedicates her time to assisting with various aspects of life, such as answering questions about Islam and offering guidance for coping with challenges. In her role, she mentors three 16-year-old girls at Melrose Home, engaging them with enjoyable activities and discussing their hobbies, values, and relationships with family and God. Beyond religious mentoring, she also provides advice on personal management and studies. Her commitment has been well-received, with one mentee sharing that the sessions have been beneficial for her mental well-being. Hidayati looks forward to extending her outreach to more youths at Melrose Home to support them during this critical phase of seeking purpose and identity
As part of skills-based volunteering, CAS volunteer Sarah organised a financial literacy workshop at Melrose Home, where she engaged youths in an “auction-style” game to envision their dream lives. Sarah, a financial consultant and former social worker, used her understanding of challenges faced by these youths to offer valuable insights. Throughout the workshop, she covered budgeting, investing, taxes, credit card debt, and buy-now-pay-later schemes. The youths, aged 17 to 19, shared their worries about independence and financial support. Sarah encouraged them not to limit themselves to part-time jobs and suggested exploring education and full-time roles with CPF benefits for long-term stability. The workshop’s reception was positive, and Sarah plans to conduct more sessions in the future, hoping to explore the psychology behind the youths’ spending habits.
In 2023, Oatly partnered with CAS for a Barista Art Workshop and Learning Journey. It was an unforgettable day centered around latte art, supply chain exploration, and food science for 30 of our children and youths. One of the highlights of the event was the captivating chocolate art latte demonstration by the talented Oatly staff. Under the expert guidance of professionals, our young participants also had an opportunity to delve into the world of emulsion and create their own unique latte art. During the learning journey, our children and youths constructed their own self-moving cars. They learnt the importance of planning and organisation by curating a list of items required such as Oatly cartons, balloons and straws. Adding a touch of realism, “Oatly Cash” was created as currency for our children and youths to buy the items required. While constructing their self-moving cars, the engineering aspect of it sparked the curiosity of our children and youths. To wrap up the learning journey, our young individuals presented their own self-moving cars, explaining their various features.
